Welcome Home, Daddy Picture

Someone sent me this picture and I thought it was pretty funny.

Here’s a woman who’s around five-months pregnant waiting for her husband who has been away on a 12 month tour. It’s one of those double takes that, even though there was probably a reasonable explanation, it’s kind of funny.

Well, about 4 people, out of the 44,000 that viewed it, thought she would actually show up to greet this guy with a “welcome back” message written on her belly after she had gotten knocked up by someone else when he was off at war. Okay.

Then there were the 20 people that thought that the average person doesn’t understand R&R leave and were appalled that she was implied in any wrong doing.

Originally I just removed the picture because I don’t want people getting all batshit crazy and send me dead cats in the mail, but then I kinda worried about those 4 people that did think she fooled around so I thought I’d find the original story just to clear things up.

Just as I suspected, the baby was conceived during a mid-term leave and Kendra Kaplan (along with their three-year old, Ayden) had brought a sealed envelope with the baby’s ultrasound so she and her husband, Staff Sgt. Joshua Kaplan, could find out the gender together. They had another beautiful boy.

See, nice. Right? They are a beautiful family having beautiful babies that were the unfortunate victims of news abbreviation.

It’s really lovely. And sweet.

And funny.

  • LOL- On first glance I thought that she looked young enough to be welcoming home HER father and announcing her pregnancy… in her high-school gymnasium…

  • I thought that the photo on THIS site was referring to the pregnancy picture/ outfit, just like all the other photos in the article, not like the original news story which referred to the possibility that the baby wasn’t her husband’s (I don’t find the news story funny at all). I like how moms & couples do the pregnancy & prenatal pictures, and wish I had done something like that with either of my two sons, one of which I got pregnant with the day after I finished Army basic training lol. There are so many different kinds of pictures; funny, weird, unique, scary, sweet, crazy, etc. I think it was sweet that Kendra went to welcome her husband home pregnant with an R&R baby, with the ultrasound to open with her son and husband to find out the gender of the baby. Congratulations to Kendra & Staff Sgt. Joshua Kaplan, who now have a beautiful 2yr old boy, as well as their son Ayden.

People need to stop judging & spreading rumors, especially since they don’t know what is going on in other people’s lives, & all it does is cause pain & drama smh. "People who spread rumors are like walking infections. The lying words from their mouths spread like disease from person to person. The only way to stop the disease is to keep your mouth shut."

    • Umm…no offense but I was about that big when I was 5 months pregnant with my second. Seriously, at 18 weeks people started asking if I was having twins. I had two "big" babies and as a result I popped early and was HUGE with my second child.

My initial thought when I saw the picture floating around, also being an Army wife, was that the pregnancy fail referred to her homecoming "outfit" and that it was an R&R baby (and R&R can come at different times during the deployment – it’s not necessarily right in the middle). The homecoming outfit was a little on the tacky side – but the story was sweet, funny, but sweet

  • Thanks for the whole post however it really isnt funny at all that people wanna say I cheated and non the less showed up to his homecoming pregnant with someone elses baby!! Thats messed up. We are still married and have a beautiful 2 year old son named Tomas! Our other son is also turning 6! So please get alife other than bashing something that was not done to end up in the media but to welcome home a soldier!

  • Oh, come on with all of the "offense" because "military families sacrifice so much". Sure, they do, that doesn't make this picture any less funny. Where is your sense of humor?

For the record, if I had been knocked up when my husband returned from Iraq, we would have both been cracking jokes about it.

  • Thanks for posting the REAL story behind this picture. I saw it here last week and wondered how many people would think the same thing that happened after that photo was aired – that she got pregnant while her husband was deployed. My husband is in the US Army, and I can't tell you how many women get pregnant on mid-tour leave (also known as R&R). It's extremely common. And for some IGNORANT jerk to put words on a photo which he/she doesn't understand anything about is cruel and wrong. Because of that photo, that woman and her family endured great ridicule and pain. So much so that she finally gave her son a PATERNITY test to prove that he's her husband's son! Absolutely ridiculous. If you want, you can read more about the woman and her family here: http://spousebuzz.com/blog/2011/11/decency-fail.html And feel free to share!

  • Having been on several fertility boards with wives of service men I know that some military families opt to freeze sperm and use artificial insemination to build their families while hubby is out on deployment. Our military families sacrifice more than civilians will ever understand. <3

  • Good on her for wanting to flash her belly -period. When I was knocked up there was no way in hell I was flashing my gut to anyone… on purpose. That sucker has a mind of its own!

  • Funny, as a military spouse, my FIRST thought was awe- A R&R baby! How special!

So many people don't realize what military spouses give up supporting their soldiers to fight the wars. That includes having the spouses there for big events, like births and deaths.

Maybe I'm just overly sensitive, since my husband is a soldier going out on deployment. The fact that people would think it's FUNNY that the wife could have possibly cheated on her soldier, well, I just don't find it's funny at all. It's a shame that someone, somewhere even over-dramatically attached something so ugly to something that should be considered so beautiful.

Hopefully, if the original creator of that misleading 'Pregnancy Fail' will find humor should his/her own spouse actually stray.

  • yes, that would be an R&R baby. military gals actually plan pregnancies that way. they don't wanna have a bun in the oven at the beginning of the tour for risk of them missing the birth, so hence the r&r baby or end of tour baby.

although, her choice of homecoming outfits was a bit over the top.. apparently she missed that class w/ the other unit wives on whats appropriate.
