Underwire bras and pregnancy

Okay, this is a no brainer for people who hate underwires to begin with, but if you’re not a member of the Itty Bitty Titty Committee and you like a good underwire in your bra, then you may not be keen on skipping the scaffolding.

As far as I could find out, not wearing an underwire during pregnancy is a complete myth and you should wear whatever bra is comfortable.

It probably stemmed from the idea that you shouldn’t wear an underwire when you’re nursing because it may impede milk flow – this is also a myth although some sites say it’s worth a shot if you keep getting mastitis.

I actually think some of these naysayers are confused about what an underwire does in a bra, I mean, it doesn’t actually wrap around your boob like a garbage bag twist tie or anything – it just helps your bra keep its shape and therefore adds a little extra support.

I suppose if you’re you’re a size 38QQQ and you’re sporting a 32AA with underwire, there could be problems, but that would be the result of an ill fitting bra, not the underwire. Get yourself to one of those bra places that has an old Greek woman that sizes you up like the oracle in the Matrix and get your guns slung up good and right. You don’t need a damn lawsuit if you take someone’s eye out, you have onesies to wash and fold!

Oh, and if you are one of those women that can go braless or simply wear one of those tank tops with the built in bra ledge, I don’t want to hear from you. You make me jealous like women with sleek, Asian hair that can wear chunky earrings.

So the go for the underwire in your boulder holder if it pleases you. That, or just go braless in a mesh tank top. You know, depending on what look you’re going for.

Lock and load!

  • The myth of the ‘should not wear underwire during pregnancy’ flogged me through both of mine when I had to go in for new bras. The sales ladies at ahem a very nice department store insisted on only giving me NON-underwire because I was pregnant. I wear an F cup and found non-wired bras incredibly uncomfortable and lacking real support. I ended up purchasing wired bras on the ‘down-low’ by wandering down to another department cashier. If was so upsetting to feel guilty purchasing bras with wire! You’d have thought I was drinking in a bar with my wine perched on my very prego belly!!!

  • New studies seem to indicate that wearing a bra will not actually reduce saggage over time, so despite never having been one to go bra-less and a nursing size of DDD, I’ve mostly given up on bras and it is SO LIBERATING! I just wear an undershirt that doesn’t get in the way of easy nursing access and go. Granted, I also don’t leave the house too often, but I haven’t had the slightest hint of mastitis yet in 10 months of nursing.

  • For those ladies who simply cannot stand a uni-boob (really, i came with two!) and need an underwire, can i suggest you look into HotMilk bras? Im a G cup so i was shocked when i managed to actually have two boobs in one of their bras without a wire. Seriously. Oh, and some of them are actually in colours other than white. Totally serious. Enjoy.

  • Ugh! I have had to ditch the underwire and gone for a soft cup maternity boob sling contraption.
Not only does it make my two ladies become one, but the fabric is just not thick enough to keep my enormous nipples from sticking out! I've nursed 2 babies now and no longer have pretty little nips. Gross.
I've now taken to wearing cardigans with the top button done up to hide the little monsters… I simply refuse to insert breast pads now to squish them… I'll have enough of that coming to me in 5 weeks!

Love your blog, have laughed til I cried at least twice!

  • I love your blog and I love you. I am not pregnant, nor do I have children yet, but I hope to have some in the next couple years. However, your blog CRACKS. ME. UP. I about go into hysterics every time. I love your potty mouth and your way with words. You remind me a lot of my best friend. I wish you lived closer so we could also be besties.
