Ever wondered what kind of book a pregnant science writer would write?
Well, probably not but it turns out it’s something magical like unicorn burps and I couldn’t put it down.
The book is called Do Chocolate Lovers Have Sweeter Babies? by Jena Pincott and it’s chalked full of incredibly cool facts about the science of pregnancy – not what fruit your baby resembles at 19 weeks like most pregnancy books (it’s the size of a mango for the record).
- Are bossy, dominant women more likely to have boys?
- Why do skinny chicks have more daughters?
- What does the baby’s birth season predict about her personality?
- Do fidgety fetuses become feisty babies?
- Where does maternal instinct come from?
- Can men breastfeed?
- Why are babies born in the darker months of the year more likely to grow up to be novelty-loving risk takers?
- Do mommies have better brains?
- Could eating chocolate during pregnancy actually improve your baby’s temperament?
I was seriously blown away by some of the chapters in this book and this is coming from someone who would have probably opted for a public rectal exam instead of taking a science class in high school (I have no clue, nor do I care, what elements are liquid at room temperature) – so that’s saying something.
It’s easy to read, completely fascinating and a happy departure from the ‘how to nurture a sleep trained, eco-friendly, vegan baby in sign language’ books I read when I was pregnant. The chapter on “Is there a purpose to painful birth?” is worth the cost of the book alone.
