Gymboree & Crazy 8 – Another One Bites the Dust

Gymboree is set to close its doors after filing for bankruptcy for the second time in two years.

What stores are affected?

This closure will include every Gymboree, Gymboree Outlet and Crazy 8 store in the US and Canada.  For now, their Janie and Jack brand will remain available while the company explores a possible sale of that branch.

Per the Gymboree website, the closures will happen “soon.” Some stores are slated to close as early as this week, with others following on an undisclosed timeline.

The fine print

Beginning this week, look for “going out of business” sales at Gymboree, Gymboree Outlets, and Crazy 8 stores – that’s the good news.

The bad news, aside from all those people losing their jobs, is Gymboree is no longer accepting GymBucks or Gymboree rewards.

Their gift card policy is also unclear. On their FAQ page, Gymboree states, “We have asked the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for authorization to honor return policies, merchandise credits, and gift cards for 30 days.” How this plays out in individual stores may vary, and we’ll see if further clarification is issued in the coming days.

Changes will also be made to their return policy. Once going out of business sales start, all sales will be final.

If you’re a part of Gymboree Play & Music classes, though, don’t worry. This portion of the company was sold in 2016, and isn’t affected by the bankruptcy announcement.

One thing we learned from the Babies ‘R’ Us closure last year is that things change quickly once bankruptcy is announced. Don’t hesitate to speak up in the comments if you know something we don’t.
