Baby Items to Have If You're Easily Grossed Out

By Amy Morrison

Parenthood is a messy adventure, and for those with a delicate constitution, it can feel like navigating a minefield of potential "ick" moments. While I'm not generally squeamish (I could share some truly revolting stories from my early parenting days—9 times out of 10 involving poop), even I occasionally encountered something that would drive me absolutely nuts.

Whether it was an unreachable booger in my child's nose or a stranger with a cold sore reaching to touch my newborn at the grocery store, the parental "ick factor" became a constant companion.

Fear not, squeamish parents – this guide is your lifeline to staying clean, sane, and somewhat composed during the beautiful chaos of raising a baby.

1. Naväge Baby Nose Aspirator

Sadly, babies aren't born with the magical ability to blow their noses. For parents who get queasy at the thought of manual nose cleaning, the Naväge Baby Nasal Aspirator is nothing short of a miracle. A board-certified ENT designed it, and recognizing that babies aren't exactly fans of having their noses cleaned, the aspirator comes with lights and soothing music to keep your little one calm and distracted during the process. I love this thing. You can find it on the Naväge site, at Walmart and on Amazon.

Diaper Genie Platinum Pail

2. Diaper Genie Platinum Pail

This odor-containing miracle features a hands-free foot pedal so you can easily dispose of diapers without juggling a squirming baby. It holds up to 47 newborn diapers, so you won't be constantly emptying it, while its odor-locking clamps keep unpleasant smells contained. The included Easy Roll refill with tear-off bags makes disposal super simple. You can find it here.

Bumco Baby Bum Brush spreading diaper crean on a baby's leg

3. Bumco Baby Bum Brush

This ingenious diaper cream applicator evenly distributes ointment on your baby's sensitive skin without the usual mess. Made from soft, flexible BPA-free silicone, it lets you simply scoop cream, apply it gently, and stand the tool upright on any flat surface using its suction cup base – no more cream-covered fingers or dresser tops. You can find them here.

DermaFrida The FlakeFixer on baby's head

4. DermaFrida The FlakeFixer

I wasn't so much grossed out by cradle cap as I was driven by the desire to get that crusty scuzz off my baby's perfect head. This specialized tool helps you tackle those flaky scalp situations with precision and minimal scrubbing. The satisfaction of gentle "mother monkey picking" can't be understated. You can find it here.

baby on a disposable change pad

5. Disposable Change Pads

These are lifesavers when you face one of those hazmat-level blowouts and need to toss as much as possible. While many have plastic backings, I prefer the biodegradable options—you tend to work quickly in these situations with minimal soak-through risk anyway. After all, it's not the planet's fault that your baby wasn't quite ready for carrots. You can find them here.

baby in a car seat with a sign to keep stangers from touching her

6. Pregnant Chicken "Do Not Touch" Baby Sign

These sturdy signs keep overzealous strangers at bay and reduce the risk of unwanted germs (while simultaneously lowering the chance of you being arrested for decking an old lady at the mall). Available in a variety of funny but firm phrases, they attach easily to car seats, strollers, wagons, and carriers. Fun fact: I once had someone order one for their old, grumpy dog's stroller – I could relate on so many levels. You can shop them in my store and on Etsy.

bath toys that don't grow mildew or mold

7. Mold-Free Bath Toys

Nothing ruins bathtime quite like seeing your baby suck on a toy only to discover it's filled with that slimy, black sludge that somehow grows in all of them. These innovative toys prevent water from getting trapped inside, keeping them mold-free. You can find them here. We have a whole list of other mold-free bath options in another post if you're interested.

baby with long sleeved bib eating food

8. Mess-Proof Bibs

I always joked that my kids were like members of the Ton in the Regency era because they changed outfits so often. When kids start eating solids, I swear only 16% makes it into their mouths – I still shudder at the amount of butternut squash puree I would find up a sleeve on any given day. These bibs do a nice job of keeping clothing clean so you're primarily dealing with just "heads and hands." You can find them here.

baby in high chair dropping food on a splat mat

9. Bumkins Baby Splat Mat

These mats are perfect for catching spills and managing the "cause and effect" stage when babies discover the joy of dropping food on the floor. You can simply scoop these up and shake them off outside or throw them in the wash, preventing cemented cereal on your floor or rug. You can find them here.

Note: If you have a food-motivated dog, you can skip this – they're living their best life during this food dropping stage, and I refuse to interfere with that.

waterproof mats

10. Lil Helper Lifesaver Waterproof Mats

Whether during diaper changes, playtime, or mealtime, these waterproof mats are soft on both sides and create an impenetrable barrier between your surfaces and life's chaos – think of the slat mat above more like a tarp and this is more like a blanket. While not cheap, these washable, reusable mats last well beyond the baby years and will serve you through bed barf, couch peeing, bed-wetting, and all the general leaking years to come. You can find them here.

woman pouring water into a silicone microwave sterilizer bag

11. Microwave Steam Sterilizer Bags

These ingenious bags transform your microwave into a germ-destroying machine. Simply add water, place bottles, pacifiers, or breast pump parts inside, and zap for a quick, thorough sterilization. Each bag can be used multiple times, making it both convenient and cost-effective for keeping baby items clean. You can find them here.

baby with nose picker tool

12. Frida Baby 3-in-1 Nose, Nail + Ear Picker

This multi-purpose tool helps you tackle those little nooks and crannies that you can't (or shouldn't) get at with your fingers. You've never known the rush that comes from extracting a giant booger from your child's nose so they can breathe easier—and so you don't have to keep looking at that "bat in the cave" that remains just out of reach. You can find them here.

child holding an ice cream cone in a silicone holder to stop dripping

13. Boon Drizzle

Do you enjoy watching your toddler attempt an ice cream cone on a hot summer day before they have the skills to manage the melt or eat it fast enough? No? The Boon Drizzle catches drips and melts so you aren't left with a sticky-armed child and a trail of ice cream everywhere you go. You can find them here.

Listen, Parenthood Is Gross

Let's be honest – there's no way to completely avoid the messier aspects of raising tiny humans. Whether you're finding your 'grossness factor' footing as a new parent or arming yourself with tools to shield your family from the disgusting things in the world, these products offer a helpful start. At the end of the day, we all end up eating the odd french fry off the floor so never sweat it too much.

What would you add to the list? I'd love to know in the comments.
